Davies Maguire provided structural engineering services from feasibility to construction for the full refurbishment and Cat A fit out of 6 More London, a 6-storey steel frame and composite metal deck office building.

Starting from feasibility stage, we worked closely with the architect to design new amenity spaces for the building’s tenants. By optioneering a variety of different arrangements and materialities, alongside carrying out detailed load analysis on the existing structure, we were able to justify a proposal for new lightweight balconies, using a 24m long jacked transfer beam to redistribute the loads across the existing foundations without needing intervention into the ground. The site is located by the River Thames and has a high water table, so any groundworks would have made the project unviable and avoiding foundation strengthening was a critical concern. Throughout the following stages, we were able to further optimise the design to minimise the demolition required to the existing superstructure and façade.

The reception area was extended and full refurbished to produce a new, high-quality space including a three-storey feature staircase. Access to the surrounding existing structure was highly constrained by a large volume of existing services which had to remain live during construction, so creative engineering was needed to find the most efficient strengthening design that minimised site welding and installation of heavy steelwork in the constrained area.

Other elements of the project included secondary structure to support new feature walls, alterations to builderswork penetrations, and a new frame to carry PVs on the roof, carefully designed to oversail the Building Maintenance Unit without obstructing its operations, while also not impacting the sightlines and allowable levels for structure on the roof.
