Killamarsh Active Community Centre

A full renovation and extension of the Killamarsh Active Community Centre, outside Sheffield.

Davies Maguire were appointed by Pulse Design & Build to provide structural engineering services for the refurbishment of the redundant leisure centre in Killamarsh. The centre was to be redeveloped into a community-centric space with a variety of activities. Works included creating a new two-storey gym within an existing badminton court, by constructing a new mezzanine level and feature stair. The reception and bar were also expanded into a brighter, open-plan café area.

A detailed structural assessment was undertaken of the existing structure, complicated by multiple prior extensions, of varying constructions. It was found that the existing foundations had limited additional capacity, and the extent of possible new foundations was complicated by existing underground gas pipelines, requiring in some cases for new foundations to cantilever over existing.

Deep beams were used to efficiently span the 8 m gym width, allowing for a column free space below, with services co-ordinated through web penetrations. Composite metal deck was used to keep the floor build-up of the new mezzanine lightweight, while still controlling the floor vibrations.
