We are excited that our project Mill Hide is one of the five finalists for the Architizer A+ Awards, in the Private House (L4000-6000sf) category – the only project in the UK to be shortlisted! The world’s largest architectural awards celebrate the most innovative and inspiring designs. This year’s theme is Rewarding local innovation with global recognition, recognising buildings that meet universal challenges with locally relevant solutions.

Mill Hide is an elegant, modern house, envisaged as a single structural form that is at one with its natural surroundings in the adjoining Nature Reserve. It is the first project to have been approved by the South Cambridgeshire District Council under Paragraph 79 of the 2019 National Planning Policy Framework, which allows construction of a new dwelling in the countryside only where ‘the design is of exceptional quality’ and ‘would significantly enhance its immediate setting, and be sensitive to the defining characteristics of the local area.’

Davies Maguire designed an efficient steel frame and lightweight timber roof, which used minimal columns to achieve large spans and bright, open spaces. The CorTen cladding is specially formulated to develop a protective layer of rust, which protects the deeper portions of the steel from succumbing to corrosion, as well as giving a beautiful reddish-brown coating. Structurally, the rust layer also serves to connect separate steel sections across joins, so that within a year or two, a structure could become one solid piece, which will be extremely rigid and durable
